Transport for London has paused the English language test for Private Hire Drivers. This was a licensing requirement, but as a large number of Public Hire drivers were not passing the test, TfL has decided to pause this requirement. Imagine travelling to one of the world’s most popular capitals, and not being able to communicate with the driver in the language of that country. An incredible safety concern!
I think given the nature of the job speaking English to a reasonable standard is a reasonable requirement.

One might assume that, not there many jobs in life that doesn’t require the local language to be spoken. Thanks for the comment.

As a time to time visting Yank, I find my poor English skills are sometimes confusing to cabbies in London. But imagine flagging down a cab and saying ‘I think I drank too much and may be sick’ and having the cabbie say back ‘ya, I can get you to Southditch, no worry Frank”.
It may be a sign that AI fully automated transport is coming, you know, where the car or bus will respond by throwing you out, hosing you down, but with a cheery ‘and Bob’s your uncle’.
