There used to have a self-styled ‘Pearly King’ who would stand dressed up in his outfit in my Aunt’s pub on the Old Kent Road, hoping people would buy him drinks. I always found him to be a rather sad character, to be honest.

It was The Rising Sun. 799 Old Kent Road, near the junction with Ilderton Road. I believe it was later knocked down, and there is now a cheap food shop there.
