Once, and only once, I succumbed to the blandishments of an “illegal” because I found myself waiting in a queue for a cab without possibly a long wait ahead of me.
He got me where I wanted to go and the fare was not exorbitant but during the whole ride I was aware that the vehicle had serious problems and stopped him short of my actual destination to escape.
Since then I have used legal cabs.

I once had a small knee op, the vehicle taking me home had a cracked windscreen and it looked like the car doubled up as a roving skip.
