London in Quotations: Doris Lessing

London has changed enormously and so have the English in the past decade. They’re more like Americans and more like Europeans, too. They’re always eating out, and when they’re at home they don’t cook the way they did ten years ago. They’re all sitting around in cafés, like the Continentals, drinking coffee and chattering and watching the world go by.

  1. We have certainly become more like our American cousins eating junk food , although I try to avoid it myself. The only time I have eaten outside in London was at the Cabmens shelter at Russell Square. Two bacon and egg sarnies and a mug of tea! Excellent it was too!
I can vaguely remember being taken to what I think was a Lyons tea house? Or was it a Corner house? I must have been about four or five and living in Poplar. Proper London 🇬🇧
