That’s one and a quarter inches in real measurement. I don’t think we panic about that much in London, at least not when I lived there. I recall driving an ambulance that had polymer snow chains on the tyres during one bad winter. It was similar to driving along railway sleepers with no tyres.

When I first started work (aged 15 1/2) it was the winter of ’62/’63 it snowed up to 2 feet down our road and lasted until nearly Easter
