London in Quotations: Helen Simpson

Tea at the Ritz is the last delicious morsel of Edwardian London. The light is kind, the cakes are frivolous and the tempo is calm, confident and leisurely.

  1. We took my mum for tea at the Ritz on her 80th birthday. She was incredibly excited, and had no idea how expensive it was. When we were sitting in the bar later, she secretly slipped me a £10 note and said, “Go and get the three of us a drink”. One small glass of wine was £9.50, and that was in 2004. I got the drinks and gave her £1 change. ☺

    Best wishes, Pete.
